Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is an exercise technique that involves restricting blood flow to an arm or leg to help patients build strength and heal. BFR training can be beneficial for a number of people, including:

  • Post-surgical patients: BFR can help patients recover faster from injuries and prevent muscle atrophy.
  • Athletes: BFR can help athletes build muscle and strength while reducing the risk of injury.
  • Individuals with joint injuries: BFR can help reduce stress on joints while still improving strength.
  • Elderly individuals: BFR may provide health benefits for the elderly.

During BFR training, a physical therapist uses a cuff to partially or completely block blood flow to the exercising limb. The patient then performs resistance exercises while the cuff is in place. The restricted blood flow causes the body to produce hormones that promote healing and muscle growth.

A physical therapist will determine if BFR training is appropriate for a patient and create a personalized treatment plan.
